Coffee in Bahay Kubo: Barako Haus

Overall Experience:
 8 out of 10

Tagaytay hosts numerous restaurants and cafes that cater to local tourists to the Baguio of the South and seekers of the magnificent view of Taal Lake. To stand out amidst stiff competition, Barako Haus chose to offer a traditional native Filipino or Bahay-Kubo inspired theme.

Located in Serin West Tower, Barako Haus exudes an exciting Filipino ambiance with its wooden-colored walls and rattan-furniture. They also incorporated banig or buri mats into their decor and even in their placemats that more to the theme.

Their menu offers selections of sandwiches paired with Kapeng Pinoy or Kapeng Barako besides the pastries they have in their display case. Lastly, they have an array of drinks with Sibet Kape as a base - a highlight and a reason to come back for.

In addition to the Sibet Kape, Barako Haus' charm also laid in the fact that they allow their customers to dine-in in "Indian Sit" as if sitting on your house's floor or sitting Korean style. I love this dining experience as this makes the place very comfortable and cool. It made me at ease and feel at home.

As I sat feeling at home, my order, egg sandwich and kapeng barako (Php 134), came. The sandwich was normal, a good pair for the Kapeng Barako that truly gave a kicking for its strong taste with its earthy bitterness with strong acidity. A potent drink for waking up, so much so I decided to add milk after few sips.

Summing up, Barako Haus gives another take on a Filipino-style cafe, one that is different from others like Cafe de Lipa or Kuuma Kakao. Not only they bring Filipino coffee in the center, but also a Filipino-themed design that gives comfort like home. Indeed, Barako Haus will be a nice place to enjoy coffee amidst the cold winds of Tagaytay.
